It affects more commonly the dwarves who still live mostly underground. Their thirst for digging deeper and deeper to uncover the secrets and treasures in the stones. Due to this behavior, they are also experts in keeping what they have found safe.

Map 36 – Old Dwarven Mine

This is a cave that ages back, was mined by a dwarf clan, Clan Torchbeak. Because of clan conflicts back in their mountain ranges, they had to go and never came back to this place.

They left some trinkets and tools all over the place, but nothing really of value; except what they hid in their treasure room. There are to accesses to this mine, the old elevator winch that can be found inside a cave, the PCs might stumble upon it by coincidence. The other access was built by kobolds mining away from their lair.

They found the dwarven mine by accident and have already sacked most of it, except the treasure room. Outside their lair tunnel, they placed two defensive ballistas. Kobolds can randomly attack in any location of the mine.

Other underground denizens are good ideas for encounters in this mine. For example, anytime a PC examines a pile of rocks, an ore box or ore cart; a swarm of insects or rats jumps to attack.

There are two pit-traps in the main mine. Both reset themselves automatically after an hour of being triggered. The treasure door is metal reinforced. The dwarves would use a pair of magical climbing boots to easily access the key.

In the treasure room, the treasure is suspended in a platform. A magical panel can be used to lower the platform for access.

If someone climbs on top of the platform without lowering it, the cable holding it snaps and everything falls down the pit, never to be seen again. If the platform is lowered with the panel, climbing on it is safe. I'll add additional maps as I make them. Also feel free to post your own interpretations if anybody else has been making these maps for themselves too! So first up is the site of a goblin ambush. The goblins will be hiding in the bushes near the dead horses.

This was my first serious go at trying to make hills. I think they turned out ok, and thanks to Ralph and Dogtag for their efforts on making wagon wheel tracks which I think I plagiarised nicely : Comments and suggestions always welcome and attached directly below the picture is the FCW too.

Second map is the hideout where the goblins came from. The players hopefully follow a path from the previous map and end up at the Cragmaw Hideout. The map in the actual adventure book is a goblin hideout made up of caves but I was struggling to create natural stairs and small escarpments with any sort of depth so made this map more of a dungeon style with walls, floors and ladders.

I figure goblins would be pretty stoked to live in either. Uses a mixture of Jon Roberts and DD3 symbols. The skinny tunnels connecting some of the rooms together are supposed to be skinny and also quite steep difficult for the players to climb. As you look at the map, the tunnel on the right side drops from right to left, and the tunnel on the left side descends from left to right. I've been playing through Lost Mine of Phandelver as well, it's what led me here as we are playing on a VTT and I wanted nice looking battle maps.

The elevation is almost there, but I'm struggling with elevation as well just look at my Old Owl Well map. The Cragmaw hideout is functional and looks very nice but not very cave like, I ended up just using a scan in from my book so I can't criticize to much.

My Lost Mines of Phandelver Maps I started with the goblin ambush, I was using the Causac and it doesn't look that great and is not very functional, same with Agatha's lair. The Old Owl Well I attempted to show hills and it turned out alright, not pretty but functional enough, I have been doing research since to show elevation better using saturated layers and such.

The street view was for confronting the Redbrands at the Sleeping Giant. After this map i decided to stop combining the Causac trees with default CC3.

With the three random travel encounter maps and Wyvren Tor you can see my style developing a bit better. I'm quite pleased with the Redbrand hideout, if I had more time I would have cleaned up where the stone floor goes to cave and if I knew what I know now I would have made it look more like it was carved out of the stone rather then sitting on top a flat plane. But this map is where things were finally coming together for me. I really like how Thundertree came out.

Lost Mine of Phandelver

Would it be hard to turn the black area into white? I would love to use this but the idea of wasting the ink to print a mostly black page is daunting. Of course I could always print it at work but it still seems like a waste. I want to join in all the praise because this is a great utility. Benedictus, just change the "Background" pulldown to white and you get a white background. Easy as that! I am a lazy, lazy DM who sucks at drawing maps.

Since this was first published in November the Dungeon Master Guide was released and provides lists of Monsters by Environment in Appendix B, but the lists are basic.

Challenge Rating: 3 p. They can be trained, if raised in captivity from an egg. Have your adventurers face off against a basilisk and its master in an underground cave. Behir Challenge Rating: 11 p. Have a behir attack from ambush in one of these locations, using the ceiling and walls to its advantage. For a social encounter, have a very full behir decide to aid your adventurers somehow on their way to face a powerful dragon.

Have your adventurers interrupt a rare conclave of multiple cloakers for a tougher challenge. Mind Flayer Challenge Rating: 7 to 8 p. They are magically resistant and are natural psionic spellcasters with the ability to detect thoughtslevitatedominate monster and plane shift. Their abilities and lawful evil alignment make them naturals to create an empire on the backs of mind-controlled slaves.

Also called illithids, they are the evil at the heart of many adventures. Minotaur Challenge Rating: 3 p. A minotaur cares little for tactics and will recklessly attack and charge, leaving itself open to counter attacks by those that survive the onslaught.

Place one of these savage monstrosities at the center of a labyrinthine set of tunnels or some other maze-like environment. Purple Worm Challenge Rating: 15 p. Purple worms are attracted to noise and can be used as a big surprise interruption for a higher level group fighting an easy battle.

A purple worm or multiple worms can also be a source of a complex network of tunnels. Defeating a purple worm can be a good time for you to drop some serious treasure on your players as these worms are usually quite filled with precious metal and gemstones, especially if they are hunting in a mine. Nearly their entire existence is devoted to gathering food. Have a group of troglodytes hunting your lower level adventurers, looking to drag them back to their lair as food.

Have any adventurers who are knocked unconscious in a battle dragged away to be be eaten unless rescued by those left standing. Umber Hulk Challenge Rating: 5 p. Set an umber hulk at the center of a mystery of disappearing explorers or miners to set-up a tough encounter for lower level adventurers. The Wave Echo cave, if put to a standard 5 feet to 1 inch scale, is a massive 5 feet by 7 feet. Ramp it up until the players intervene, and stop the fight short of killing the NPCs. Guess what, the leader's daddy has the city's politicians in his pocket, and their family holds grudges. Now you have a chance for Sildar Hallwintermember of the Lord's Alliance if you choose to play out the factions in the adventureto see the party looking out for the little guy. He can urge them to leave the city quicklyand offers a way out in the form of an escort mission.
